Friday: Get Ready It Is The 17th Year

That's right it's the Cicadas! The offspring of the cicadas seen when Bill Clinton was president will be emerging from the ground this spring and summer. Although they don't affect the weather, they will be affecting our day to day activity. I was looking forward to the warm weather but now that I know that these guys will come with it... I'll take back any mean things I said about the cold weather.

Once the temperature get consistently above 64 degrees Fahrenheit, the cicadas will start to emerge from the ground. States who will see as many as 1 million cicadas per square mile include: Connecticut, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Although cicadas are concentrated in the East other areas of the country can see these huge bugs as well. So in other words get prepared for the humming and buzzing the 17 year Locust is coming this year. I found this site, cicadamania.com, was super helpful in protecting young shrubs and such.

Friday: National Severe Weather Preparedness Recap

If you missed this week's Severe Weather Preparedness Week, don't worry, I thought that I would give you all a recap of what you learned this week. Because it is super important that you know all of these things when severe weather does hit.

Thunderstorms and Tornadoes can move in any direction! If you see these terms flashing across the screen you know what they mean:

Severe Thunderstorm Watch: A "Watch" means that you should be alert for severe weather later in the day or night.
Severe Thunderstorm Warning: At this time you should take shelter while the storm passes.

You need one of these three things for a Thunderstorm to be severe:
1. Producing one inch or larger in diameter hail
2. Producing winds equal or exceeding 58 miles per hour
3. Producing a tornado

Each year, many people are killed or seriously injured by tornadoes and other types of severe weather, despite advance warning. In 2012, there were more than 450 weather- related fatalities and nearly 2,600 injuries. Every state in the United States has experienced tornadoes and severe weather- 46 states reported tornadoes in 2012- so everyone is exposed to some degree of risk. Often the real "first responders" to an emergency don’t have flashing lights and sirens. They are moms and dads, store managers, and teachers. What they do before, during, and after an emergency can save lives.

Basically just take precaution when severe weather is in your forecast!  Stay Safe Everyone and Happy Severe Weather Preparedness Week!

Friday: East Coast Hurricanes Through the Years

I stumbled upon some Hurricane History provided by the National Hurricane Center. Because Sandy is so fresh in my mind and I am sure some of your minds as well I thought I would share some of the other big hurricanes that have hit the East coast since 1938. Now just to let you know the National Hurricane Center did not start naming hurricanes until 1953, so prior to then they were just given the name of the town they destroyed. Also the Saffir-Simpson scale was not used until the 1970's, so any prior storms were not assigned a category till way after they had hit.

The New England Hurricane (1938)
For example, in September of 1938 the New England Hurricane made landfall. Another name for this hurricane was the "Long Island Express". This was the first hurricane to hit the Northeast since 1869. The New England Hurricane was later deemed a category 3 hurricane with the sustained wind speed of 121mph recorded at Blue Hill Observatory in Massachusetts. The U.S Coast Guard recorded storm surges of 10 to 12 feet along Long Island and Connecticut. This Hurricane was the cause of nearly 600 deaths and 308 million dollars in damage. The Great Atlantic Hurricane (1944)
Another strong hurricane hit this region in September of 1944. This one was called the Great Atlantic Hurricane. The Great Atlantic Hurricane skirted along the eastern sea board, bringing 134 mph sustained winds at Cape Henry, VA. Hurricane force winds were experienced all along this storm track from North Carolina to Massachusetts, including a maximum gust of 109mph reported in Hartford, CT. Rainfall totals ranged from 6 to 11 inches. There was very good warning for this hurricane. Only 46 deaths were reported on land. However, one of the US destroyers, USS Warrington, sunk due to the storm, claiming 344 lives.


Hurricane Carol (1954)
Late August of 1954, the second year of named storms by the way, Hurricane Carol made landfall over Long Island, as a later deemed category 3 hurricane.  Sustained winds of 80 to 100mph were recorded over much of eastern Connecticut and Massachusetts. Storm surges brought 8 to 10 feet of water into downtown Providence. Hurricane Carol was responsible for 60 deaths and 461 million dollars in damage. Hurricane Edna (1954)
Talk about your "One-two Punch". Hurricane Edna came just a week after Hurricane Carol hit. Luckily, Hurricane Edna did not take the exact same path as Hurricane Carol and only skirted Cap Cod as a category 3 hurricane. Below is the track of Hurricane Edna.


Hurricane Donna (1960)
First detected on August 29th, Hurricane Donna quickly became a hurricane on September 1st. Hitting the Florida Keys and Southwest Florida hard as a category 4 hurricane on September 11th. Hurricane Donna then continued up the coast hitting North Carolina as a category 3 hurricane and then New England as a category 3 hurricane as well. Hurricane Donna is the only hurricane to produce hurricane force winds in Florida, North Carolina, and New England. Hurricane Donna also was responsible for storm surge ranging anywhere from 5 to 13 ft. Heavy rain fall was also associated with Hurricane Donna.

Hurricane Agnes (1972)
Mid June was the first named storm of the season and was one to remember. Hurricane Agnes hit the Florida panhandle and moved through the southeast emerging back out into the Atlantic. Hurricane Agnes then made landfall again near the New York, New Jersey. Although, this hurricane wasn't known for it's winds. Hurricane Agnes is known for it's major rainfall. Inland flooding was the major problem was what made this hurricane so memorable.



Some of the areas hardest hit included the Harrisburg area which recorded over 15" of rain, Baltimore, and Scranton was another city that still has flood lines on buildings from this hurricane. Below is a picture from the Balitmore area after Hurricane Agnes hit.


Hurricane Bob (1991) 
Hitting Rhode Island as a category 2 hurricane on August 19th, Hurricane Bob made quite the mark on the New England. Hurricane Bob was the second costliest hurricane at the time. Although, Hurricane Bob quickly weakened as it made landfall, stations did record 105mph winds.

Hurricane Floyd (1999) 
Alright, so I would like you all to know Hurricane Floyd is one of the largest reasons I became a Meteorologist. Hurricane Floyd first made landfall in North Carolina with winds of 120mph and storm surge of 9 to 10ft. However, Hurricane Floyd was remembered for it's rainfall. Below is the track of the storm.

So why was this hurricane such an influence on me becoming a meteorologist, well it was the first storm that me and my dad tracked. Following whether or not the eye was going to reform was really exciting. Science was something that I already enjoyed and ever since that I have been super in tuned with what the weather is and what could and is going to happen. In the Lehigh Valley, where I lived at the time, we received 12 inches of rain. The east was in a drought and this Hurricane helped put a dent in it. Look at this picture from New Jersey.


Hurricane Irene (2011)
In late August, Hurricane Irene headed north, first hitting North Carolina with sustained winds at 85mph. It then continued northward skirted along the Jersey Shore and completely made landfall over Brooklyn. However, Hurricane Irene continued to reek havoc on New England. Strong winds and heavy rainfall devastated Vermont and New Hampshire.  



Hurricane Sandy (2012)
Well, I know this hurricane is fresh in everyone minds. Hurricane Sandy, formed late in the season and when it made landfall was an extratropical system. This made it hard for meteorologist to post warnings, because there wasn't defined lines on this type of storm. The storm surge was 10 to 14ft. Hurricane Sandy was also one of the biggest hurricanes, being about 900 miles in diameter.

These are most of the major storms that have hit the Northeast in the past century. I highlighted from what I thought to be a reliable source, the National Hurricane Center, but if you are interested I did find a Wiki Page with more information on Hurricanes that hit the Northeast.

I did this big throwback to make people understand that big, powerful hurricanes have hit New England before and will probably hit the area again. That we keep having "record breaking" damage, but my last statement is there is a lot more people and a more things that are much more expensive in years past, so is it really record breaking?

Friday: The 6 Most Snowiest Cities in the US

Looking at a 30 year annual average snowfall from the National Climate Center of the National Weather Service, the Weather Channel compiled a list of the top 6 cities that receive the most snow on average. To add dramatic effect I put them in reverse order.

Number 6: Boonville, New York
Claiming to be the "Snow Capital of the East", Boonville, which is located smack dab in Lake Ontario's snow belt, receives an average of 197.3" of snow per year. Cool westerly winds and some help from Orographic lifting, as known as mountains, help make this particular area prone to get tons and tons of snow.

Number 5: Lead, South Dakota
Lead, which is pronounced Leed, is located in the Northern region of the Black Hills. Influenced by many Canadian low pressure systems it's no wonder that Lead receives an average of 201.4" of snow per year. Pictured below is one of Lead snow storms in 2011.

Number 4: Truckee, California
Located near the north shore of Lake Tahoe, Truckee receives an average of 202.6" of snow per year. Most of the snow that falls in Truckee comes from strong Pacific storms. Truckee most infamous storm came in 1880, when a storm dropped a whopping 16 feet, yes I said FEET of snow, in a four day period. This is thought to be a world record. Truckee is also known for is frigid temperatures. Below is a picture of Truckee Christmas of 2011.

Number 3: Hancock, Michigan
Coming in at number 3, Hancock, located on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, receives an average of 211.7" of snow per year. Influenced by both Lake Effect snowfall and strong Canadian low pressure systems it's no wonder they get all of this snow. And I suppose if you are going to live in the cold snow harsh environment, might as well celebrate it. Below is a Keweenaw County 1978 snow marker. Hancock is also known for their snowfall guessing contest.

Number 2: Crested Butte, Colorado
Located about 4 hours South West of Denver, Crested Butte receives an average of 215.8" of snow per year.  Sitting at an elevation of 8860 snow is quite common from November through March and is also not unheard of to have snow occur as late as June.
Number 1: Valdez, Alaska
Coming in at number one is Valdez, Alaska! Valdez receives an average of 326.3" of snow per year.  326.3 inches of snow is about 27 feet of snow per year. In 2012, they had a snow storm that buried the town alive. For more information about this event check out my earlier post Throwback 2012.

Friday: Record Low Tornado Deaths

For the past 200 days, the United States has not seen a deadly tornado. (Knock on Wood). The last tornadic related death was during Tropical Storm Debbie when an EF-0 went through Venus, FL on June 24th, 2012. With a low tornado count for 2012 it's no wonder that we only saw 68 tornado related deaths in the states with only 936 tornadoes confirmed.

Friday: Jan 1st Snow Cover

To wrap up your first week of 2013, I thought I would let you all know that on January 1st, sixty-seven percent of the nation was snow covered. The highest it has been in ten years.

White Christmas??

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas! However, all of you will not see my dream come true in real life. Right now we have several states who already have snow on the ground. Check out the current snow depth from the National Weather Service.

 With some new data in this is what I'm thinking for the United States snow cover through December 26th. These chances represent at least 1 inch of snow.

New Hurricane Regulations

The National Hurricane Center is modifying its qualifications to issue a Hurricane Warnings north of North Carolina. The National Hurricane Center, NHC, had a boat load of criticism because of how they handled Hurricane Sandy's warnings. In all honesty they went by the book on this storm and didn't put out Hurricane warnings out in New Jersey, New York and Delaware. I say this because all of the models were forecasting that Sandy would transition into a post-tropical system meaning that it was no longer a hurricane before it made landfall. And the models were right, Sandy did become post-tropical before it made landfall, however, just because it became a post-tropical system didn't mean that the storm system would not have hurricane force winds and hurricane type storm surge.

I am not saying that if the Hurricane Warnings were issued that there would have been less damage. But I think that more lives would have been saved, and that the local authorities would have taken this storm more seriously and enforced evacuations within their city limits. However, that is all in the past and you can only learn and hopefully improve for next time, which is exactly what the National Hurricane Center is doing. Starting in 2013, the National Hurricane Center will have the wiggle room to issue multiple advisories on post-tropical cyclones. Ultimately this means they mended the qualifications for an Hurricane Warning to be issued.

Winter 2012-2013 Outlook

As most of my friends are very big skiers/snowboarders, I thought that heading into December, I would give you all a Winter Outlook.

I've been looking at some of the long-term models for this winter and they are all hinting towards a big snow year for the northeast. Take a look at the map I drew below.

This map totally was decked out in colors that you can't see for some reason. But with a near normal El Nino, and a model hinting negative North Atlantic Oscillation, we should expect to see above normal snowfall in the east and down the Appalachians. The Mid-West could see a big storm or two but will be below normal in terms of snow fall. All of the Equal Chances are just areas that could swing either way this winter.

To all of my winter loving friends in the east get your winter gear ready! If you all didn't know winter is my FAVORITE season! I love the snow, cold weather, and to predict the big snow/ice storms!

Climate Checker: 5th Globally Warmest October

According to the National Climate Data Center, October 2012 temperature averaged globally the 5th warmest on record. Records of global temperature have been kept since 1880.  The map below show the departure from average temperatures across the globe. Note that shades of red indicate warmer than average and shades of blue are cooler than average.

A Little About Me and My Blog

Basically, I turned my biggest interest and hobby into my career. And I want to share my love for the weather with all of you. I want to cover all sorts of topics in the field. With that said I made up a schedule for me to follow. It is going to go as followed:

Monday: Myth Busting Monday's. Taking one myth at a time and seeing the science is behind each of them.
Tuesday: Forecasting 101. I'll tell you the basics about how you can forecast just like your TV Meteorologist.
Wednesday: Wacky Weather Wednesday's. I'll find the craziest weather stories and share them with you.
Thursday: Throwback Thursday's. Reaching through the past and bring up some old storms and weird phenomena.
Friday: Keeping Current Friday's. I'll keep you all updated with what's going on in the the Meteorological world with Climate forecast and Big Storm updates.
